GeniGods: Nezha – A New Era of Action RPGs Inspired by Chinese Mythology
In an exciting development for gamers and fans of mythology alike, Suzhou-based Genigods Lab has unveiled its upcoming single-player action RPG, GeniGods: Nezha. Drawing clear inspiration from the acclaimed God of War series, this title promises to deliver an epic journey steeped in rich Chinese folklore.
Developed using Unreal Engine 5, GeniGods: Nezha is being optimized for PlayStation platforms, with a special collaboration with Sony. Co-founders Erdi Yao and Young Lui have confirmed that a playable build for the PS5 Pro has already been submitted to PlayStation China, ensuring that the game will utilize the full capabilities of the console, including the innovative features of the DualSense controller.
Players will step into the shoes of Nezha, a prominent figure in Chinese mythology, reimagined here as a formidable female warrior. The narrative unfolds as you evolve from a celestial artifact into a human crafted from water and clay, ultimately transforming into the legendary Nezha. Alongside iconic heroes like Yi, the sun-feller, and Yu, the flood-tamer, players will embark on an adventure filled with ancient puzzles, formidable trials, and the dark truths of a new world, aided by the Heart of Sacred Water—a sentient gift from the goddess Nüwa.
What sets GeniGods: Nezha apart from other titles in the genre is its fast-paced and fluid combat system, which the developers emphasize is not a Soulslike experience. Instead, they liken it to the epic battles found in God of War 3, featuring larger-than-life encounters that seamlessly transition between heaven and earth. Players will have the freedom to tackle bosses in any order, reminiscent of the classic Mega Man structure, allowing for a more personalized gameplay experience.
In addition to the main storyline, players can expect a hub-like area to explore during downtime, where they can engage in side missions and upgrade their abilities. This approach aims to provide depth and variety, ensuring that players remain engaged throughout their 25-hour journey, with an estimated 50 hours required to achieve Platinum status.
While Genigods Lab is perhaps best known for its mobile title based on My Hero Academia, GeniGods: Nezha marks a significant departure as a traditional single-player adventure devoid of gacha mechanics or live service elements. However, players will have to wait a while longer to experience this ambitious project, as the team anticipates a release date in 2028, which could potentially align with the launch of the next generation of consoles.
As the gaming community eagerly awaits further developments, GeniGods: Nezha stands out as a promising title that not only embraces the rich tapestry of Chinese mythology but also showcases the potential of modern gaming technology. With Sony’s involvement and the creative vision of Genigods Lab, this is certainly a title to keep on your radar as we move further into the future of gaming.
