Jets Face Major Setback Ahead of Season Opener Against Steelers
As the New York Jets gear up for their highly anticipated season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers at MetLife Stadium, the team has been struck by a significant setback. Just days before the kickoff, it was reported that starting right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker has suffered a torn triceps, a devastating injury that could potentially sideline him for the entire season.
According to ESPN, Vera-Tucker, who is in the final year of his rookie contract with a hefty $15.3 million salary, is currently seeking a second opinion on his injury to explore options that may allow him to avoid surgery. However, the prognosis is not looking favorable for the 26-year-old offensive lineman, who has already faced his share of injury woes in recent seasons.
This latest injury comes just a year after Vera-Tucker’s 2022 season was cut short due to a torn right triceps, suffered in Week 7. In 2023, he faced another setback with a torn Achilles in Week 5, also against the Denver Broncos. The young lineman was initially drafted 14th overall and quickly became a starter, playing in all 16 games during his rookie year. Last season, he managed to start 15 of 17 games despite missing a couple of weeks due to an ankle sprain.
Vera-Tucker’s absence is particularly concerning for the Jets as they have emphasized a strong running game this season, which is crucial for protecting their new quarterback, Justin Fields. Fields, known for his struggles with passing accuracy, has a tendency to hold onto the ball longer than necessary, making offensive line protection even more critical.
With Vera-Tucker likely out, the Jets will need to adjust their offensive line strategy. Reports suggest that incumbent center Joe Tippmann may be shifted to right guard, while Josh Myers, who was in competition for the center position, will take over at center. This rearrangement will be essential as the Jets prepare to face the formidable Steelers defense, notably their star edge rusher T.J. Watt, who is expected to test the rookie right tackle, Armand Membou.
In addition to Vera-Tucker’s injury, the Jets are also dealing with other injury concerns. Cornerback Sauce Gardner and backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor were both listed as partial participants in the team’s walk-through due to lingering issues from training camp, but both are expected to be available for the game.
As the Jets look to start their season on a high note under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn, this injury presents a significant challenge. The team will need to rally together and adapt quickly if they hope to secure a victory against the Steelers this Sunday.
