One UI 8: A New Era of AI and Foldable Technology

In a groundbreaking announcement last month, Samsung unveiled One UI 8, a transformative mobile experience that seamlessly integrates foldable design with advanced artificial intelligence (AI). This release, which coincided with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first time a device has shipped with Android 16 pre-installed, a milestone achieved through a close partnership with Google. Galaxy users can now benefit from faster access to the latest Android features, combined with the enhanced capabilities of One UI 8.

To delve deeper into the creation of One UI 8, Samsung Newsroom spoke with key figures in its development: Mihyun Jeong and Joonhwan Kim, who led the development and design efforts, respectively, and Nawoong Han, who oversaw collaboration with Google from Samsung Electronics’ Mobile eXperience (MX) Business.

One UI 8 is designed to elevate the user experience, focusing on personalization and efficiency. Jeong noted that as AI technology evolves, user expectations rise, prompting a task force of customer experience (CX), user experience (UX), and development teams to enhance One UI 8’s overall quality. This effort culminated in the core concepts of “multimodal AI, a form factor–optimized UX, and a proactive personalized experience.”

The design philosophy of One UI 8, articulated by Kim, revolves around the theme “When Foldables Meet AI.” This concept highlights the innovative convergence of foldable devices and AI technology, allowing users to experience the evolution of Galaxy phones across various form factors.

One of the standout features of One UI 8 is its AI capabilities on the Galaxy Z Flip7’s FlexWindow. Users can access AI features instantly without unfolding their device. A quick press of the side key launches Gemini Live, enabling users to engage in natural, conversational interactions with AI. This functionality allows for real-time camera viewing and event scheduling directly into the calendar, streamlining everyday tasks.

The Galaxy Z Fold7, with its expansive main display, maximizes One UI 8’s potential for multitasking. Users can display AI-generated results in Split view or Floating view, facilitating efficient task management. The innovative Screen sharing on Gemini Live allows for real-time interaction with AI while using multiple apps, enhancing productivity.

The development of One UI 8 has been significantly bolstered by Samsung’s collaboration with Google. Han explained that both companies worked closely throughout the planning and implementation phases, sharing code and troubleshooting in real-time. This unprecedented partnership has resulted in the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 being the first devices to feature Android 16 out of the box.

The synergy between Samsung and Google has also led to advancements in Samsung DeX, which has evolved to support desktop windowing on Android devices. This collaboration ensures that app developers benefit from a consistent user environment, ultimately enhancing productivity.

In addition to its powerful AI features, One UI 8 emphasizes thoughtful design and user security. Kim highlighted enhancements made to animations and visual effects across various apps, creating a more immersive user experience. Notably, the clock feature can now recognize subjects in wallpapers, aligning itself with their outlines for a dynamic visual effect.

Security is a top priority in the age of AI, and One UI 8 incorporates advanced security measures such as Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection (KEEP) and Knox Vault to safeguard user data and AI features. Jeong reassured users that robust threat-blocking mechanisms have been integrated into the device, along with tools for users to manage their own security.

As we look toward the future, One UI 8 heralds a new chapter in the integration of foldable technology and AI. Jeong expressed confidence that these innovations will provide users with more effective automation and personalization in their daily lives. Meanwhile, Kim emphasized the potential for enhanced value and enjoyment across various devices, from foldables to tablets.

Samsung’s collaboration with Google is set to deepen, focusing on expanding their partnership across all areas of Galaxy, particularly in AI. With One UI 8 beginning to roll out to other devices in September, starting with the Galaxy S25 series, users can anticipate a new era of possibilities in their everyday experiences.
