Page content

In an era where technology seamlessly integrates into our daily lives, Apple has taken a significant step forward with its digital car key feature. Introduced in 2020, this innovative capability allows users to lock, unlock, and start compatible vehicles using their iPhone or Apple Watch, all through the Wallet app. As of now, several major automakers, including Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo, have adopted this technology, and the list is poised for further expansion.

How It Works

The digital car key feature operates at three distinct levels, each varying by vehicle model:

  1. Passive Entry: Users can lock, unlock, and start their cars simply by being in proximity to the vehicle.
  2. Remote Functionality: This allows users to lock and unlock their cars from a distance.
  3. Express Mode: This unique feature enables users to access their vehicle without the need to unlock their iPhones or authenticate via Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.

To utilize this feature, users need an iPhone XS or newer, or an Apple Watch Series 5 or newer. For those interested in passive entry, an iPhone 11 or newer, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or newer is required.

Current Vehicle Compatibility

As of July 2025, several vehicle models are compatible with Apple’s digital car key feature:

  • Audi: Models from 2025 and newer, including A5, Q5, and SQ5.
  • BMW: A wide range of models from 2021 and newer, including the 1 Series through the 8 Series, and newer electric models like the i4 and iX.
  • Hyundai: 2023 and newer models like the Palisade and IONIQ 6.
  • Kia: Recent models such as the 2023 Telluride and 2024 EV6.
  • Genesis: 2023 and newer models, including the GV60 and G90.
  • Mercedes-Benz: 2024 and newer E-Class and EQ models.
  • Volvo: 2024 and newer EX30 and EX90.
  • Polestar: All models of the Polestar 3 and 4.
  • RAM: The 2025 RAM 1500.

Moreover, brands like BYD, NIO, and Lynk & Co. have also started to embrace this technology, although availability may vary by country.

Future Prospects

At the recent WWDC 2025 keynote, Apple announced that 13 additional automakers are set to introduce vehicle models compatible with the iPhone car key feature. This includes well-known brands such as Acura, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Porsche, and Rivian, with Rivian’s second-generation R1S and R1T models expected to support this feature.

As technology continues to evolve, the integration of digital car keys is just one example of how our relationship with vehicles is changing. The convenience of controlling your car from your smartphone not only enhances user experience but also signals a shift toward smarter, more connected vehicles.

With the automotive landscape rapidly adapting to these advancements, it’s clear that the future of driving will be heavily influenced by technology, making our journeys not only easier but also more secure. As Apple and other manufacturers continue to expand their offerings, we can expect to see a growing number of vehicles equipped with this innovative feature, making the dream of a fully digital driving experience closer to reality.
